The Whooliganz - Proposed Album (1993) (Cassette) (320 kbps)

THE WHOOLIGANZ are early 1990s hip hop group consisting of Mad Skillz (Scott Caan) and Mudfoot (Alan Maman), started with the help of QD III
Caan and Maman met as teenagers in the wealthy neighborhood of Beverly Hills, California. The duo began performing throughout the Los Angeles area and gained recognition. Maman's childhood friend Evidence introduced the group to Quincy Jones III and they began work on a demo. They eventually caught the attention of B-Real of Cypress Hill, who invited the teens to join the collective Soul Assassins, which also consisted of Cypress Hill, House of Pain and Funkdoobiest. The Whooliganz toured the country with the Soul Assassins and their connection helped them land a record deal with Tommy Boy Records.
The Whooliganz recorded their debut album, Make Way for the W, and the album's first single was "Put Your Handz Up", produced by DJ Lethal and released in 1993. But the single and music video did not receive much airplay. A second single, "Don't Mean Nothin'," was planned but then Tommy Boy decided to drop the group and not release the album. Another song, "Whooliganz," was released as a single in 1995 in the UK on Positiva/EMI Records, but the duo had already gone its separate ways. Caan followed his father, James Caan, into a successful acting career. Maman turned to making beats and became a rapper and a successful and very well known producer under the stage name The Alchemist.
________

Since i been blogging, there have been few holy cassette grails... i mean those albums that got shelved and never saw daylight, but people kept requesting them and remembering that demo tracks existed somewhere. This is the one right here. When i saw this gem ova at CLAAA7 blog earlier in december, i thought "aaw sh!t, Christmas must have come earlier this year!" I downloaded it and gave a listen and should say - this is one helluva album... A shame that it got cancelled by label... Anyway, Claaa7 says that original props should be given to Mista Mo who brought this to masses. Here's his quote:

"This is not "Make Way For The W", the unreleased album. It's probably a demo tape intended for internal listening at Tommy Boy. The name "Make Way For The W" was probably taken from the song of the same name, which isn't on this but has surfaced on another demo tape. It is likely that versions of some if not all of these tracks would have been on the final album. Versions of Time Goes On, Put Your Handz Up, Hit The Deck and Whooliganz were released on singles, the rest of the tracks are unreleased. Time Goes On is incorrectly listed as "Whooliganz - Original" on the UK Whooliganz 12". Put your Handz Up is a slightly different mix to the single version (e.g. the horns before the first verse). Whooliganz is not the same as the single version. It is nearly identical but does not feature B-Real. A version of T-Rays beat for "Keep On" was used for Wayne Smith - Under Mi Sleng Teng (Soul Assassins Remix)."
